Proposal for Layers of Meaning Research Project

2-D Art Proposal for Research Project

12-1-11

I’ll have photographs of people with animal masks on. They will be lined up and be put behind bars/wire. Beside each of the masked people, there will be the product that the original and actual animal was tested on. Beside that, there will be a drawing of the masked person using the product on themselves one way or another.

Testing Your Make-Up On A Rabbit?

When reading about this source, I found many facts about animals used in experiments. The unbelievable numbers of animals killed in the process and the overall consequences of the situation are also stated.

This is a website that specifically focuses on the MARS corporation [candy] and demonstrates what exactly they do to animals to “test out” their products. There is also a video on the website that makes one think about the worth of testing on animals.

This link leads to a website that is for a documentary. It focuses on the overall impact that human kind has had on the animal world. This is an extremely graphic film and anyone who watches it is warned of the crude nature of the film. [Although it shows the truth, it’s not always easy to watch…]

This wasn’t a very long article, but I did not know that the money used to fund animal experiments is the taxpayer. [AKA: The people!] To think that we’re the ones paying for useless experiments that only kill!

Even by experts it is agreed that animal experimentation is not as reliable as people think it is. Many of the results discovered aren’t even applicable to the human race, making it a waste of: money, time, and of course animals.

This website is from the United Kingdom and involves mostly the European Union. Apparently, they have banned the testing of animals for the majority of products and other things on the market, but the companies making products elsewhere and the import of those products doesn’t help the situation. Being the consumer, we have control on the things that are being sold by not buying them. If banned, the products tested on animals could be eliminated and it could be the beginning of an anti-cruelty world.

Peta is notorious for being an anti-cruelty organization and their efforts are recognized throughout the nation. This article focuses on how companies are not required to label that they are cruelty-free and how they can mislead the consumer into thinking they either are or aren’t testing on animals. A company could mention that they didn’t test a certain product on animals, but the rest of their products could have been.

This website has a large list of companies that sells products tested on animals at one point or another and refuse to stop.

Jim Carrey starrs in the T.V show In Living Color and becomes Environmental Guy!

Ryan Higa’s [Nigahiga] youtube channel.

Ryan Higa made a video showing how he and a couple of his friends were holding “Honk For Japan” signs to raise money to donate to the Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund to help Japan after the Earthquake and Tsunami.

The picture that has text “drawing out” a whale is an example of Language. [The words become the drawing/piece.]

The picture of Pablo Picasso’s famous Guernica painting is an example of The Picture Plane. [Simplified figures and shapes.]

The (embarrassing) photograph of myself is an example of Reality. [Not altered and is a moment of my life frozen in time.]

At first, I didn’t know what zines were. But after reading about them and seeing what they actually are, I now understand that they’re “self-made” booklets. [But still considered art.] I like that they have the do-it-yourself mindset because if nobody else will help, then help yourself right? I think that I’d enjoy this project because I like to doodle, and having a place to put these in is a great way to keep the “doodles” organized. [I think I’ve made one before but not realized that it was a zine, haha]
…
I liked this artist’s zine, not only because it looks similar to something I would want to create, but also because of the sudden bursts of color that come with it. It’s black and white as well [which I really like].

1. I really liked the film. I thought the fact that those artists did things their way and not according to an art critic was just awesome because it shows that success can be made by a few people and don’t necessarily need a “professional’s help”. I also liked how random people came together to make art and end up making  a living out of their fun. I actually have a similar attitude towards my art, most of the time it doesn’t actually follow guidelines, but how are you supposed to create things if you’re doing the same technique?

2. My inspiration is really anything that catches my attention. I don’t like to be in one spot for too long unless I’m really interested, and if there is something interesting, i could stay there all day. Some specific things that inspire me are old black and white images or photos from the early and mid 1990’s. I want to focus on pen and ink drawings because i like the bold lines that come out of the materials used. [It also gives it the ‘antique’ feel to the art.] I’m going to try to draw things that i usually don’t draw and abstracting them a little bit, maybe incorporate some color into the drawings.

Pepsi Logo

The Rolling Stones Logo

Superman Logo

Deadmau5 Logo

The Kings Of Leon album Come Around Sundown is an example of Analogous Colors. The warm Reds, Oranges, and Yellows make the picture satisfying to the eye because there isn’t a drastic change in color all at once.

The orange and blue lines artwork is a Complementary Color piece. The orange and the blue are directly opposite on the color wheel and therefore make the piece seem more dramatic than if the colors were yellow and green for example.

The Superman Logo is and example of Triad Colors. The Red, Yellow, and Blue are all equidistant from each other on the color wheel. It makes the “reader” want to “get more” out of the picture.

I reposted this photo of a boy and his teddy bear because:
#1. It’s adorable
#2. The bear is elevated and the boy is small so he has to look up and point, bringing the attention to it as the main focus
#3. The overall feel of the picture is old and it makes one want to see more of “his story”
#4. It makes me see what the past was like and how different it is now
#5. One doesn’t see many little boys with teddy bears nowadays
#6. It’s kind of a mystery as to why the bear is up on a stick
